My students are an incredibly diverse group of students at a low income public school on the South Side of St. Louis. They are funny, kind, hard-working, and wise. They also claim, loudly, to "hate reading." I am determined to change their minds this year! These kids come from rough backgrounds with enough sad stories to fill a book of their own, but when they come to school, they get lost in the goofy, madcap world of Sixth Grade. They laugh, they pass notes, they cling to each other like kids who haven't seen half of the hardships they have. I'm slowly working on convincing them that books can be an excellent escape into a whole new world, and they're starting to come around. In the words of one of my students after he got his hands on Percy Jackson & the Olympians for the first time this year, "Wait...Ms. LeRose...I think I actually LIKE this book!"
