In many middle school classrooms, it can be difficult to motivate students to focus. To encourage engagement during class, I use a program called ClassDojo. In ClassDojo students can earn points for being on task, helping others, persevering, participating, and working hard. Students are seated in team tables and earn points as individuals and as a group. The team that has the most amount of points in ClassDojo at the end of every two weeks wins a fun prize of their choice! Focusing on positive behavior is a much more effective strategy than punishing unwanted, negative behavior. Acknowledging that students are making good choices helps foster pride, self-esteem, and academic success. These fun prizes that they can win are one small way that I can show them how far their efforts can take them.
