What I would like to accomplish with my DonorsChoose project is to be able to help those students who need flexible seating options. I would also like to use the alphabet and number stamps as a literacy learning station. Lastly, the mobile easel would be a lifesaver as an educator because it can be used in so many different ways to help me reach more students. My wish is for my students to be able to come to school and learn in a environment that is safe and comfortable for them. Think about when you were in school, and how uncomfortable the chairs were. For me, I absolutely learn best when I am comfortable, so why not have that same option for students? Some of my little guys (first graders) are too wiggly to sit at a conventional table and chairs and effectively learn. For those that need it, the flexible seating options could make a drastic difference in the amount of information they are able to take in, as well as help with some behavior issues. The bouncy balls, for example, are a great seating option for those that have to be moving. It gives them enough stability to stay in one place, while also giving enough flexibility that their bodies are preoccupied while the mind is learning. The seating cushions would be awesome for other kiddos with this problem as well, because it gives them a chance to get their wiggles out unconsciously while also being able to pay better attention to me during instruction time. The reality is that many of our students go home to an unsafe home environment, where they are treated more and more like adults from a young age. At school, kids need to be able to be kids, especially first graders.
