This class set of the book Sophie Hartley, On Strike will enhance my lessons on comparing and analyzing literary elements and my lessons about the Bill of Rights. I plan to group students in a variety of ways and have several different practice opportunities that align with the reading and social studies concepts. Students can apply what they've learned about connecting the elements in order to share their understanding of the text and to summarize the text effectively. Another reason I chose this particular book is because the book's conflict and theme align with our Bill of Rights unit about freedoms and responsibilities in a relatable, humorous way. This integration of ELA and social studies will benefit students because it allows me to differentiate. By integrating ELA and social studies activities and assessment, I know I am teaching the standards thoroughly as students transfer their learning. Therefore, I can be responsive to a variety of learner needs through a cross-curricular format.
