Reading is a crucial part of our everyday lives, which is why literacy centers are an important part of our day at school! Fostering a love for reading at an early age is key to help ensure student's success. A listening center is a wonderful way to foster a love for books and reading by giving students an opportunity to engage with books and develop their listening and comprehension skills through being able to listen to a story, follow along, and answer questions about the text. When students are listening to stories and following along in the book, they are able to grow a deeper understanding of reading and begin to make connections with print. A listening center is also a great tool to differentiate learning and include readers of all reading levels. By providing a listening center for my classroom students who find difficulty with reading will have the opportunity to engage with print, without the challenge of having to read for themselves. Students will still be able to engage with books and follow along and improve their reading and comprehension skills just like students who find less difficulty with reading. With this new audio center, I could ensure that students are quietly engaged and fostering a love for reading, while I work with a small group of students during literacy stations. Multiple students will be able to use the CD player with CDs, comfortable headphones, and books to independently take control of their own learning!
