I teach ninth and tenth grade English in a poor school in Mississippi. My students have the potential to succeed; however, most don't believe they can. In his memoir, Ishmael Beah tells his story, the story of a young African boy in love with American rap music living in a war torn country and forced to make adult decisions as child. The stories of my students look much like the story of Beah. My students live in poverty, most with only one parent if that, and many are forced to make adult decisions at a time when they should be focusing on their studies, who they're going to take to Prom, and various other teenage decisions. Just like Beah, my students know hardship and pain. Unfortunately, the majority of my students do not believe that a world exists beyond the borders of Mississippi; most believe they are trapped in their situations forever.
