I would like to provide a clay project for our kiddos in art class. The purpose of this project is to provide opportunities for our 3rd-5th graders to explore the wonderful world of modeling and sculpting. This project consists of building sea-life installations inside plastic jars that can be seen from multiple points of view. Students will research, explore, and develop a written plan about how they visualize saltwater-creatures inside their aquariums. Essentially, students will collaborate and problem-solve ways they can manipulate wire armatures covered in Crayola Model Magic to create aesthetically-pleasing ocean experiences. We will begin by observing a variety of sculpture installations, imagining how they were constructed. Next, we will discuss the challenges we may encounter during the making of our projects. For instance, it's important to fill up the physical space inside the jar to demonstrate good composition. The creatures should be built up from the lid; therefore, the lid will be the sea floor and the jar will be displayed upside-down. Also, it is important the creatures fit comfortably inside the jar. Another challenge is the clay animals may have to dry out a little or balance on found objects so they do not droop on the wires during the building process. Therefore, engineering is part of our design processes involving critical-thinking skills. After completing our projects, students will write evaluation/reflection summaries about the frustrations, challenges, opportunities, and joys they experienced during their art-making experiences.
