It can feel like a Sisyphean task to get 7th grade students to read, but it's choice and autonomy that are crucial for middle schoolers to buy in and feel engaged. If funded, this project will provide just that by creating small, student-chosen Literature Circles. Students, in groups of 4-5, will be reading various non-fiction biographical accounts of significant individuals and groups. Malala Yousafzi, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Malcom X, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Bryan Stevenson (of the Equal Justice Initiative), and more. Students read and prepare each week for a facilitated discussion and collaborative projects that support them to work through the context of the text as well as typical organizational structure and language features of informational texts. The project culminates with a group presentation to peers, so that all students have some degree of access to these incredible people or groups that have shaped our world and offer insight for the endless pursuit of a more just and equitable society.
