There is hardly a good reason why the ukulele should not be a fixture in music education. Few people are able to resist its charms, and it far surpasses the potential of any other single instrument as a practical learning tool. It’s strength comes from a versatility that not only makes it adaptable to many different kinds of music but different lifestyles and aptitudes as well. This gives it tremendous advantages in developing both music literacy and an affinity for music-making that can last a lifetime. In our classroom, the ukulele engages students in a process that develops authentic musicianship and a positive attitude toward music. There are no special sizes or design modifications necessary for children and students enjoy the prestige of playing a grown-up instrument. The ukulele can be conveniently taken almost anywhere, given its small size and light weight, and practiced without disturbing others, given its quiet sound. Because of the ukulele’s unlimited potential in the music classroom, I use it as a learning tool for the entire school year with three different grade levels.
