In the state of Indiana, 51% of children have experienced one or more adverse childhood experience (e.g. parental alcohol or drug use, exposure to violence, sexual abuse, exposure to mental illness, etc.). These children are more likely to form drug and alcohol addictions, be diagnosed with physical or mental health problems, and have a lower life expectancy. While this statistic is alarming, research has found that a stable, nurturing relationship with at least ONE caring adult can prevent the damaging effects of this toxic stress. As a school counselor, I vow to be that influence on all of my students. I vow to encourage and motivate my students to be successful both at school and in society. I vow to have a welcoming, supportive, and inclusive office environment that meets the emotional and academic needs of my students. I vow to be the change.
