My students attend a k-8 urban school in PA, and they are bright, vibrant, and talented. They are also accustomed to lacking and sharing materials, or having to make due with limited supplies. However, I believe they deserve much more. A good art teacher in the inner city can make miracles with oil pastels and glue, but when students learn entirely new media or techniques, they also expand their horizons. There is an underlying benefit for school climate as well: when beautiful art work created by the students is presented for others to see, the level of workmanship expected by the student body is inherently raised. It is for all these reasons that I believe the school's Art department is one of the driving forces behind a rewarding, fulfilling, and positive school experience.
