Ensuring that students are continuing working on literacy skills over the summer is crucial to their success. Research shows that reading, even for just a small amount of time each day, can significantly improve reading achievement. In an effort to lessen the "summer slide" gap, I am creating Summer Adventure Kits for my students that focus on engaging literacy activities. Literacy skills can appear in so many different ways. These adventure kits will have activities such as designing a postcard and sending it to a close friend, going on a nature walk and researching more about a plant or animal found, or reading about constellations and then identifying them in the night sky. All of the activities in this six-week set will revolve around the creation of a summer scrapbook. In addition to encouraging literacy skills, students will get to engage with their families and communities in fun and new ways!
