It goes without saying that learning vocabulary is a fundamental building block of acquiring a second language. According to various linguists and pedagogical experts, vocabulary is best retained when contextualized. Our Spanish textbook comes with what are called "Telehistorias," or short videos that utilize the vocabulary in meaningful ways. These videos are important for the students' language learning because they provide this much needed context for the vocabulary, but the messages in the audio are still comprehensible to the students despite their entering/beginning Spanish language proficiency. Unfortunately, the software on my current device is doesn't support this vital aspect of our textbook because it is outdated. My device cannot be updated any longer to the new operating systems. For this reason, we are not able to take advantage of the full functionality of the rich textbook that we have. This is certainly detrimental for some of our students, especially for those with learning disabilities. I would love to be able to provide multiple means of instruction and representation of material in the class, and cater to my students' learning preferences. Having this new technology available to our class would mean enhanced retention of vocabulary, which would springboard their acquisition of the language altogether.
