Most of my students have lived through traumatic experiences that have had a profound effect on their lives. Studies show that trauma can wreak havoc on the developing brains of children and significantly impact their ability to learn. In an instant, the smallest trigger such as a pencil dropping can send one of my students into fight or flight mode. Researchers have found a significant link between childhood trauma and poor academic performance. My project works to combat this. My students have difficulty concentrating because of various exceptionalities and disorders such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, and multiple sensory processing disorders. As a result of these disorders the headphones will allow the students the opportunity to achieve their goals. These headphones provide the much needed sound barrier to enable the student to concentrate and focus allowing the student to function independently in the classroom setting. Students will be able to rotate through the various academic centers in the class with minimal distractions. During testing these headphones can mean the difference between failure and success for a student who is so sensitive to sound;that they are bothered by the slightest drop of a pencil or the chirping of a bird outside the window. Sound deafening headphones are useful for providing the opportunity for these types of students to actively participate in their learning within a regular setting. Earlier this year we were gifted two pairs of sound deafening head phones that dramatically improved the quality of learning for my students. When they feel overstimulated by the world around them they use the headphones to help focus on their tasks. Unfortunately, sharing two pairs of headphones between fifteen preteen boys has been a challenge. With your support we can make a life changing difference for my students!
