Visualize a brand new box of crayons, you can envision my classroom! I'm an ESOL K teacher in a Title 1 school. My class includes 8 different cultures, 4 different dialects, & and spans from one end of the spectrum to the other, demographically. Five students are non-English speakers, some enter K as their first learning environment, some attended Pre-K and are ready to learn, some (a small handful) parents are involved, supportive, & helpful but most aren't. These students are precious & capable of learning. K is a big year to build essential language & math skills. K is the only time to address letter formation, phonics, parts of speech, writing, READING, numeracy. It's different for each child & requires a great amount of time, planning, strategizing, & progressive thinking on my part, in order to engrain learning into an enjoyable & desirable experience. It can be done, but it isn't easy, nor is it free!!
