One of the most powerful teaching methodologies that I have encountered in my 7 years of teaching so far has been Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS). VTS is a research-based education nonprofit that provides a developmentally appropriate image curriculum, and a learner-centered professional development program. This methodology can be used to teach ANYTHING. I have spent 3 years studying and collaborating around VTS and have seen amazing gains in my students as mathematicians, readers, writers and scientists. Recently, I have applied VTS to writing. A major component in the success of my students as writers has been their ability to independently and collaboratively discuss each other's writing, reflect, celebrate, and continually add or change things, based on reflections and collaborative discussions, as they go through the writing process. Adding a thesaurus to their "writer's supply list" will expand students' vocabulary and further encourage their independence and confidence as writers.
