I teach 8th grade science. Our curriculum includes basic chemistry and physics. I only have one semester to teach a years worth of material because of block scheduling. That means everything I do needs to be meaningful and productive. My classes are diverse in their makeup and include all ability levels. It can be difficult to challenge the students who work well above grade level, and meet the needs to the students with very basic skills. Hands on learning is the best way, I think, to differentiate between different ability levels and achieve both goals. I truly believe students learn science best by doing hands on activities. We spend a lot of time in the lab where we focus on collaboration and inquiry learning. I am always looking for engaging activities that teach on multiple levels.
