My students are of African American decent, majority are from single parent homes, father's in jail or being raised by their grandparents. They are attending a Title 1 school with limited resources. Many of my students do not get support from home; homework is never done, spelling words are never practiced, and no one shows up for parent teacher conferences. Parents care about their children, but they have a hard life as well. My children's parents are on welfare, government housing or working 2 to 3 jobs trying to keep food on the table and the lights on.
