Many of my junior high-school students are “at-risk” students who are first-generation ELL students. My school is a low-income public school where all students want to learn. Last year, I spent a lot of my out-of-pocket money in order to buy multiple copies of different novels that captivated my students' interest. Since the book club is an elective after school activity, there is no budget to purchase novels. But – since the students choose to come after school to read willingly, I don’t want them to miss out on the benefits of reading a good book.
