I teach low socio-economic, English language learners in Texas. The majority of the children come from homes that do not speak English at all. So, it is very hard for them to pick up the English vocabulary at home. The grade level I teach is tested in writing around the end of the school year. They are expected to do so much when they come with so little. In closing the school year, they always show up and show out. My students begin the school year as struggling writers, but yet they overcome that challenge. When I am able to, I provide them with consumable materials so they have a sense of ownership. Every group of students that I have taught has been curious, creative, and lovable. I model the love of writing to engage and encourage to which they imitate. They complete the school year feeling accomplished and capable of reaching for the stars and grabbing them.
