My students are inquisitive 7 to 9 year old third graders attending a public suburban school of 810 students in South Carolina. Our school serves as the district magnet school for English as a Second Language (ESOL) learners. Our classrooms combine many cultures, life experiences and family make ups. Our school is 50% free and reduced lunch therefore we serve students on various ends of the spectrum. This year I am serving 25 students including an ESOL student, an autistic student, two students with diagnosed ADHD, and two students being treated for anxiety and/or depression through professional counseling. My students rank from below average in some areas to state identified gifted in others. They are eager learners who are beginning to understand the connections between math, their everyday world and how literacy connects and integrates these two components.
