My students come to me after already being pushed out of their regular high school for low credits or poor attendance. They come mostly from low income families, many with marginal housing and no money to buy school supplies. These students have a lot of stress in their lives with few skills to cope. Due to their lack of success in schools, many of them have an overall negative attitude about learning. In my art classes I teach them some basic skills and help them awaken their creativity and passion. In a short time I find that students are reaching a higher level of creativity and establish a more positive connection to school. There is a direct correlation to this type of success and an improvement in their overall attendance, attitude, and learning.
