I am a third grade elementary school teacher at a school that has had a hard time making AYP for the past couple of years. The community that the majority of my children and the children at this school come from is economically disadvantaged. We are also a Reading Recovery school. However, Reading Recovery works with students on word call and providing the readers with skills and strategies to help them read. The children need to be working on answering higher order questions both verbally and written. The questions often found on the end of the year test that determines our AYP status have questions that include inferencing, context clues, cause and effect, main idea, detail and drawing conclusions.
