I work at an urban school in a big city and teach all Freshman. The English department is working very hard to instill a love of reading in our students. One reason that many of my students don't enjoy reading is that they haven't had enough practice building the skills that they need to grapple with text independently. By allowing every student to have a book, I can support them in class but allow them to work with the text on their own at home, which will building critical independent reading skills.
