Our school is in a rural area where most parents work in jobs that pay minimal salaries. Students come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. Some have never even been to the mall or out of the county. Vocabulary is somewhat limited while other students have many language experiences. Like many children these days, they do not listen well in a large group situation. Therefore they need to be taught individually or in a small group situation. This year I have 25 second graders one of whom has autism, three that are gifted, six that are very limited in the skills necessary to be successful,and a few that are at-risk. On the second grade level they are still very eager to learn and to please adults. They crave my attention. I want to meet the needs of every one of them.
