My class consists of 18 5th grade students. They are faced with challenging math and science concepts, and 5th grade is a very important year because they need to pass the dreaded FCAT with information they have learned each year of elementary school. We are a Title One school with a very high percentage of children who receive free lunch due to their socio-economic status. They are also at or near poverty. They are all very eager and excited to succeed during our math and science time, however, this becomes even more of a challenge with the lack of resources at home as well as a lack of background knowledge or experiences. We have some resources at our school, but we are very limited and have to share among the other classes. This becomes difficult in planning lessons around each other's schedules to ensure that we all get use of the materials.
