My five students, four young men and one young lady, who are 18-21 years old with severe special needs are a very active bunch. They love to perform for an audience. They are working on developing independent skills such as self-feeding, independent walking, expressive communication through pictures and sign language as well as developing appropriate social skills. With an active group such as mine, it is important to give them opportunities to rest. One of my students will communicate his need to take a rest by walking to the mat and laying down. Another will even use sign language to sign the word, “relax.” Clearly my students are able to express their desire to have a restful period during the day so that they can re-energize to accomplish their specific goals.
