Established in 1899, this was the first "black high school" in this county. There is a great history and a legacy of successful graduates including doctors, lawyers, teachers, and performing artists, just to name some. In recent years the neighborhood in which the school resides has declined greatly. Now, most of our students are from challenged homes and live in poverty. There is urban blight, poverty, drug use, and gang activity. As a result, it is a challenge to motivate students to succeed. Three years ago the school moved out of its historic, old building in to a new, state-of-the-art facility. Student morale seemed to improve immediately to the point where they now seem to have a feeling of hope.
