I work with students in grades first through third. My students are diverse and include both African American and Hispanic backgrounds. They are struggling readers who need to build their phonemic awareness, decoding and comprehension skills. I work with my students daily in small groups to address their reading deficiencies and increase their reading confidence and skills. Our school is classified as a Title I school, which means that almost half of our students receive free or reduced lunch. Many of the students I serve qualify for these services. Some of my students do not have adequate home support; therefore the direct, small-group instruction they receive from me is sometimes the only reading practice and instruction they receive. I strive to incorporate stimulating activities to enable them to become successful readers!
