While serving over 800 elementary school students in "Southern Fried" South Georgia is a blessing, I have seen my students change over the past few years. Georgia is moving to fight childhood obesity, by requiring all students grades 1-12(in a physical education class) be tested using the FITNESSGRAM fitness assessment. This program allows for a qualified physical education teacher to test, record, and submit fitness information to our state as well as provide the same information to the parents of the students involved. Georgia ranks nearly last in childhood obesity rates and we must make every effort to correct this issue. The information provided by FITNESSGRAM will assist parents, and physicians to better determine a child current fitness level and prescribe a program to fight this widespread problem.
