My goal as an artist-teacher is to develop children who can think, find joy in their work, and are able to be self-directed. My intention is not to teach children to copy me or great artists, although such exercises can be fruitful, but to help them find their own ways of expressing ideas and investigating problems. I want children to realize that art comes from within themselves and is a means through which to explore, examine, interpret, and understand the world around them. The value of choice art education extends far beyond developing artistic skills and making decorative objects. The arts develop the brain in ways that are not always measurable. They teach students to think creatively and envision outcomes, to persevere through difficulties, to make decisions, and to ask questions. The key to success is a student's own judgement and trust in themselves.
