My request for these affordable cases for their tablet-based communication devices will help our students understand that these iPads are their dedicated "talkers" and not a tablet to use for game apps and videos. Having a mobile device that is dedicated to communication helps the child see it as a tool for expression, which is why they got the device in the first place. One of the consistent obstacles our staff has described is that our students see any tablet as a method of entertainment, and for autistic students, that is another way for them to remain in their own world. When we direct them to the communication app, they resist because they would rather be entertained than talk to us. This creates a power struggle and a barrier to communication development in some cases. Protecting their speech-generating devices in a visually appealing and unique case will help our students feel ownership and recognize that these are their "voices," not an avenue to entertainment. The hope is that they will proudly and happily carry them throughout the day to connect them with their peers, teachers and their families.
