Covid closure has had a major impact on the social and emotional wellness of my students. They love to be at school, but at times they have difficulty regulating their emotions. They are not used to being in the classroom with so many different personalities. In my classroom, I have a calming corner for the students to retreat to for a specific amount of time. This common corner is a location for them to regain composure, think through their emotions, and then return back to the activity the class is working on. My calming corner currently is lacking. It is just a place in the back of my room for them to sit. I would like to have some fidgets and comfort items in there so that the students can use them to help create a comfortable space. Items like the glitter wands and squish fidgets will provide something they can squeeze to help their mind think of something else. It is my goal to create a welcoming environment for them to retreat to in order to regain composure. The mailbox system will be used in my classroom weekly to sort graded papers and create organization in our classroom environment. The calm and organization of the room will help create a peaceful, welcoming learning environment.
