The aftermath of Covid-19 has left our students and families broken, and financially strained. Many families lost loved ones who helped provide financially, emotionally, and mentally. Many families are now living on welfare trying to provide for their children. Food and clothing are obviously the most important, so school supplies or learning supplies are not purchased. The items I have requested allow my students to use their imagination to create and think at advanced levels. In the Makerspace Lab, where I teach, I found the necessity of sharp cutting tools, and adhesive for students to cut and attach the cardboard or plastic that they use to repurpose or construct their ideas. We have a process of think, plan, and build. If I can not supply the proper tools for them to accomplish their goal then I am obstructing their learning process. I have witnessed students in the lab using the various tools and educational toys that I have and one of the favorite tools is the 3D pen. I have one for all of the school to share. I would like to be able to provide them with more so they can all have the same opportunities to use it and not have to wait so long for a turn. The other items on my list are small robots. The Edison Bots are great for kids learning to code, and our high school uses them so I want to give our students a head start. The Hex Battlebots are also great for coding. I want kids at a younger age learning to code and use remote controls to help build our Vex Robotic team as they grow. We are starting our own competitive robotics team to compete in Vex Competitions. Robotics gives students the confidence they desperately need right now.
