My 6th-grade students need opportunities to question, investigate, and solve problems through investigations. A great way to do this is through the instructional materials for 6th grade at OpenSciEd. To do this, they need the tools and materials needed for these investigations. The Light and Matter Unit will be built using the materials in the Carolina Intro to Waves and digital resources, the waves demo apparatus, light meter, and spectroscope. The Weather, Climate, and Water Cycling Unit will be supported with the Carolina Making Dew kit, hygrometer, aquarium tank, and clamp lamp. The Plate Tectonics unit will be supported using materials in the Carolina Modeling Plate Tectonic Boundaries, magnetic marbles, neodymium magnets, woodblocks, granite, sandstone, and limestone samples. The materials in my cart will combine with what I have in my classroom to build kits to use for the OpenSciEd lessons which will help my students use questioning, exploring, and experimenting to become critical thinkers and problem solvers. Additionally, working in groups and sharing out with the whole class (which is a practice of OpenSciEd lessons) helps my students become good communicators. Problem solving and communication skills built through exploring and experimentation in science are important skills that will help my students find success throughout their school years and beyond.
