Over the past few years, I have experimented with class reading while listening to books that are above the students’ current reading level. One of the things I have observed is, once a student is interested in reading a book, they are captivated and want to continue reading. Another revelation is that, when students read and listen to a book above their reading level, it increases their reading skills. A study by Anna Ching-Shyang CHANG of Hsing-Wu College, Taiwan in 2011, investigated the effects of reading while listening (RWL) to audiobooks. Her study showed a marked increase in students’ listening fluency, vocabulary gain, reading comprehension, and reading levels. My class has been reading while listening to classroom sets of novels above their reading level that I have purchased on my own. With the CLASS Grant, I will be able to add to the library of books we can read while listening. In addition to my class benefitting from these book sets, the other two fifth grade classes can share them as well. The books I have selected are Accelerated Reader books that our students can earn AR points for reading. The Accelerated Reader program is a great incentive to promote student reading. The books I have selected are attached, along with the AR book level, the number of AR points possible for each, and the Amazon price. I respectfully thank DonorsChoose for providing this opportunity to bless our students. References CHANG, Anna Ching-Shyang. (2011). Reading While Listening.
