My main project is to emphasize and teach effective and respectful collaboration in the classroom while exploring different building structures, architectures, and pre-design processes. Since we were out of school when COVID hit, my students and I have realized the importance of being able to physically be in the classroom with each other. We are fortunate that we can be back in the classroom and are ready to work! I want to be able to give them a hands-on learning experience of building with LEGO sets and wooden planks while also teaching the importance of collaboration in groups. Teamwork is key as their end goal will be to create a mini-community to be displayed for the rest of the school to see. My students will learn about different building designs and architecture by creating this miniature community with LEGO sets, LEGO baseplates, wooden planks, Play-Doh, and STEM toys. The selection of books will help with inspiration and design and the craft table will help create a safe, holding space for the project. The art supplies (erasers, pens, pencil sharpeners, and sharpies) will be used for the pre-design process for this activity. We will use the Lysol spray to help disinfect and clean our tools. I want to continue to build on our scientific collaboration in the classroom by teaching the students how to work together. Using the tools from the Lego and wooden plank lesson will help me to teach the students the importance of active listening, scientific argumentation and exploration of architecture and design, creating rough drafts, and final drafts, and being respectful while voicing their ideas and thoughts to the group.
