This group of kindergartners have been dependent on technology in their first years without much interaction with their peers. Their critical thinking, and social skills have been muted in their first years due to the pandemic. With a sensory bin, sand, letter and number shells, playdough, dough stampers, these students would have the opportunity to creatively learn with each other through touch. My students get excited when their hands are working! The smaller letter and number activity kits are like smaller bins to use at their tables so, we can spread out safely. We use play dough and mats to build fine motor skills as they are learning to spell their names, learn letter recognition, sight word building, and CVC words while working literacy centers. They also learn number recognition, number order, and 1:1 correspondence with numbers in math centers. They get to explore learning using the bins and play dough, wikisticks developing social skills with each other using quality materials searching thru the sand. Children learn to love through touch! Beginning the school year with development of fine motor skills searching through the sensory bin or rolling out playdough with friends learning through play. Students learn sharing and working together while progressing to letter and number recognition using stamping tools or searching for missing letters in the bin, and ending the year with sight word and cvc word building. Exploring letters and numbers with different textures in the bins or rolling it out with playdough, the curiosity to learn will build with kindergarten friends. Their first year will be their foundation for their educational years. They do it through play. Learn to play; Play to learn!
