The past two years COVID-19 has impacted the amount of hands-on learning that could happen in my Biology class due to either CDC guidelines of safe distancing or the need to transition into distance learning. Being able to incorporate as many hands-on labs for my students is critical to building those science lab and reasoning skills. One of the units we cover in Biology is Classification, the organization of organisms based on characteristics that are similar or different. I have discovered there are not a lot of options for hands-on labs during the Classification Unit, so I needed to get creative. The Animal Classification Kit and Plant Survey Kit will be a great way for my students to have a hands-on opportunity to engage and visualize how to compare and contrast the Kingdoms we study. I have already planned for several ways I can use these kits in Biology. One example is where I can begin this unit with an Engage activity where the students observe a variety of examples of each Kingdom and compare and contrast. Later in the unit, they can practice classification, science reasoning, inquiry and create their own cladograms!
