Our fourth-grade students will be learning how energy can be transferred from place to place by sound, light, heat, and electric currents. They are also expected to create an electric circuit that converts electrical energy into light, sound, or motion energy. To be able to master these standards, our students need access to several resources that we don’t currently have. This is why I am requesting your assistance to buy Snap Circuit sets for our fourth graders. Snap Circuit sets are engaging and educational kits that are perfect for teaching students about electrical circuits and energy. There are several different types of Snap Circuit sets that focus on converting electrical energy into light, sound, and motion. Each set comes with several pieces that can be snapped together in a variety of ways to create electrical circuits. Each circuit does something different, like makes sounds, causes lights to shine, or causes a propeller to spin. These kits match perfectly with the skills we teach in fourth grade, and they are also engaging and fun. Snap Circuits are useful for helping students learn how to effectively communicate with others, be engaged learners, follow directions, problem solve, and work together as a group (the pandemic seems to have caused a lack of these skills). If I’m awarded this grant, I plan on having our fourth graders use each Snap Circuit set in small groups. Students will have to work together to follow the directions and create the circuits they choose. If a group is struggling to work effectively together, I’ll coach them on how to improve their small group social skills. My hope is that our students will not only learn about energy and how electrical circuits work, but will also improve their problem-solving communication, and small group skills.
