3D printing will help me teach necessary science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) skills, as well as collaboration, communication, and metacognitive problem-solving. I can work with my colleagues to reinforce concepts and skills students are working on, like geometric shapes and fractions, measuring, geometry, coding, and more. This new technology will capture my students' imagination and encourage them to explore more deeply by making a scaled model of things like an organ, building, or bug. Instead of merely drawing, cutting, glueing, and taping, students can now create the real thing. Whether we study insects, arachnids, or reptiles, the 3D printer will undoubtedly engage students as they learn more details about things like sections of the body, number of eyes, and number of legs. What better way for me to teach landforms than watching the Sierra Nevada Mountains, central valley, Mohave Desert, and coastline features of California come to life before their eyes? Even more, I can teach innovation by asking students to design something new that adheres to concepts and features we are learning.
