COVID-19 has been detrimental to the education of students all across America, but I believe it has had the greatest impact on students with special needs. It seems that every time my students begin to readjust to classroom routines and settle into a learning mindset, the numbers pick up and everything goes virtual again. With my coffee cart program, my students will build confidence, independence, motor skills, and many other daily living skills that could potentially lead to independent learning at home. Distance learning may be less than ideal for many students, but what does it look like for children with special needs? Unfortunately for some, it looks like parents staring at a screen every evening while they complete computer work assigned to their child who can't even move a mouse on their own. Before they can independently access the available academic curriculum and virtual programs of today, students usually need to be able to follow multi-step directions. Assignments can be given that don't require the use of technology, but even those often require direct supervision, instruction, and guidance. I've decided to implement a coffee cart program as a fun way for my students to practice, learn and expand daily living skills. By taking part in the coffee cart program, my students will engage their working memory, practice large and fine motor skills, increase their communication skills, follow directions, and much more. I strongly believe that placing more focus on general independence can improve my students' quality of education across all environments, especially at home.
