The students I work with often experience intense emotions and need to take a break away from the classroom to calm and regulate their bodies and emotions. The majority of students at our school have neuro-diversity which means they also have sensory and regulation challenges. The additional stress of COVID precautions and anxiety about the virus has had a significant impact on student's mental health. The related services team has collaborated to develop a place in our school to better meet these needs. We hope to provide a safe space to de-escalate and regulate emotional distress as well as teach and practice self-regulation strategies.
