Working in a special needs setting I have learned that not all students will learn the same way, many of these children are able to retain information better with the use of visuals and physically engaging with materials. When my students are able to see, smell and touch rather than be read or shown pictures of what they are learning about, my students are more active learners and stay on task for longer periods of time. By being able to show these children how nature co-exists rather than see pictures in a book, I hope to further their understanding of the world around them. As well, some students need breaks throughout the day, the use of sensory toys will give them various outlets to help them when they are frustrated or may need some time away from the lesson.
