We want to give our students a place that is an additional "toolbox" of strategies such as: taking deep breaths, counting to ten, hugging yourself, doing exercises, using a coping tool (a fidget), pushing against a wall, relaxing by listening to music or a noise machine. A space to decompress. At our school, we want to create a calming space using lamps, blankets, rugs, floor lamps, and other comfortable materials in our school to help students practice self-regulation skills. Where they can manage "big" emotions, identify how they are feeling, choose a strategy to use, and then return to the learning environment. We want to use this to coordinate with the Zones of Regulation.
