We have all struggled to stay upbeat in this pandemic, and my students are no different. I would like them to have the opportunity to escape reality for a bit in the pages of a book, to get lost in stories, to develop empathy for diverse characters, and to have rich conversations with their classmates about the texts they devour. These books sets will help me establish several classroom Book Clubs - minus the wine and cheese, of course! The titles are varied in content, genre, and reading difficulty, so there is bound to be at least one that will meet the unique needs of every reader I teach. Who among has hasn't been tempted to get lost in a mystery, swept up in adventure, or cry real tears for a character who has come alive through artful writing? My students will get such a chance through the books I'm requesting. Their lives have been so dependent on screens these last few years, as we've struggled to reach them through remote learning channels. I'd like to bring my young readers back to physical, tangible tools where there is no risk of blue-light fatigue. If these books are as inspiring as I think they will be, then...maybe, just maybe, I can help my students gravitate to the bookshelf for the rest of their lives.
