Our students have had unique challenges the past several months as they have been trying to access academic and social-emotional learning during the battle with COVID-19. Our students with special needs are no exception. Most of them have difficulties coming to school anyway. School is hard work, harder than it is for their peers. Many of our students with special needs feel anxious just walking through the front doors. There are people to navigate and academic subjects to interpret that just don't seem to make sense. Transitions between classes and even going to recess can be overwhelming. Living in this pandemic has intensified these anxious feelings. We are finding that short breaks throughout the day have become a necessary part of our daily schedule in this new world. Breaks allow students a chance to 'recharge their batteries' so that they are more mentally and emotionally prepared to tackle the academic and social demands of their day. As a teacher, I also want these breaks to be meaningful. The products I have selected include games and activities that will promote creativity, curiosity and peer collaboration. We will be able to share and rotate these products with several students throughout the school. I am appreciative of the opportunity to provide more meaningful breaks to our students and excited to see the positive effects these activities will have on their willingness and motivation to learn.
