My first-grade students haven’t been able to experience a normal classroom environment due to the pandemic. We have no idea what stress and anxieties they are feeling. Last year, we were in remote learning for the majority of the year. My students are finding it hard to come back and sit on a hard, cold, metal chair. They want to get their wiggles out and sometimes have wiggled so much they fall out of their chairs. I worry because many students lean back on two legs, and I’ve had to stop them before they fall backward. Our media specialist ordered some wobble stools for the library and my students love them! They can move and wobble to get their wiggles out. These stools not only exercise their core muscles, but they help relieve stress and anxiety. They make sitting fun, the little cushion is more comfortable, and students aren’t leaning backward. I would like to start with the wobble stools at my small group reading table. Another added benefit is I won’t be kicked in the shins! My goal is to motivate while making learning enjoyable, festive, and joyous. My students are motivated when I point out the number of pencil shavings in the pencil sharpener because that means they are writing so much that they have to sharpen their pencils more often. I think we’ll start putting a tally mark each time we empty the pencil sharpener. Games are always an incredible way to add enjoyment while learning/reviewing concepts. “Are You Ready for Second Grade?” looks like it would help students review while building relationships, having fun, and practicing social skills maybe not fully developed while being in quarantine last year.
