My students are from a Title one school. That means about 75% are on free and reduced lunch. In my very large district we have the highest rate of students that are in ESL classes (English as a Second Language), and we have the lowest scores in reading skills. My children are poor; many have to work to help support their family. Extras, like books are just not in the budget. In fact most don't own a book and have never been to a book store. Many of my students want to continue on to college, but are still having a hard time overcoming the language barrier. Reading is one way they can help lift themselves out of the group of students that don't make it on the state wide reading tests. My students want a better life; reading can help take them there. A book in a child's hand is a powerful weapon against poverty and ignorance!
