In an effort to be a socially relevant and "WOKE" library media specialist, I seek to develop a library collection that provides a variety of opportunities for my high schoolers to become acquainted with authors and topics that explore many of the social injustices and ills of our society. Our students need opportunities to read selections on age-appropriate levels that provide challenge them to question, probe, debate, and think about the world in which they live. Adding more resources to the social justice collection in our media center will aid in my doing just that for our children. Because we are nestled in the heart of historic Montgomery, Alabama, our student body is often challenged to be better than those "greats" that have preceded them in their academic halls and in their community. Many of those who went before them, made major strides toward addressing societal wrongs and inequities that negatively impacted those of diverse colors, religions, sexual preference, and heritage. Reading fiction selections from some of today's popular contemporary authors, and reading nonfiction selections from some of our most prolific writers and historians, serves to connect our children with the past, their present, and the future. Students will be able to participate in and collaborate in classroom lessons and literary discussions in any academic area. Students will examine socially relevant topics while learning skills like text annotation, critical thinking skills, and analytical essay writing.
